After earning his associate degree in respiratory therapy, Steven Cimijotti knew his journey in health care was far from over. With a long-term goal of pursuing a career in cardiovascular perfusion, he sought a program that would expand his understanding of patient care while preparing him for the academic rigor of graduate study. The Bachelor of Science in Healthcare Studies (HCS) program at the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) became the bridge that helped him grow academically and move closer to his career goals.
What inspired you to pursue the online Bachelor of Science in Healthcare Studies at MUSC?
After I earned my associate degree, I knew I wanted to continue my education and expand my opportunities in health care. MUSC was always my top choice because of its strong reputation and access to advanced clinical training. As I explored a future in cardiovascular perfusion, I realized I needed a solid academic foundation to prepare for the demands of graduate-level coursework.
The Bachelor of Science in Healthcare Studies (HCS) program became that bridge—strengthening my understanding of health systems, evidence-based practice, and professional communication while keeping me focused on my long-term goal. Choosing the Healthcare Studies program at MUSC has been a meaningful step in advancing my career and growing as a health care professional.
Were there any courses, projects, or professors that particularly influenced you?
Several courses were especially influential, including Social Determinants of Health and the practicum course. Social Determinants of Health helped me understand how outside factors affect patient outcomes and access to care, while the practicum course strengthened my research and writing skills.
Dr. Lauren Gellar was an incredible professor and advisor who has continued to support me even after graduation as I applied to MUSC’s Master of Science in Cardiovascular Perfusion (CVP) program. Her mentorship reflects the broader HCS experience—faculty who genuinely care, stay invested in your goals, and want to see you succeed.
How did the healthcare studies program help refine your passion for care and influence your decision to apply to the CVP program?
The HCS program expanded how I think about patient outcomes, not just clinically, but through the lens of health systems, research, and long-term impact. It strengthened my ability to evaluate evidence and understand the “why” behind care. Through coursework and my practicum research, I gained deeper insight into cardiovascular perfusion and confirmed that I’m drawn to high-acuity, highly technical roles where preparation and teamwork directly affect outcomes. The program gave me both the academic foundation and the clarity to confidently pursue perfusion.
What advice would you give to prospective healthcare studies students?
Start with a clear goal, but stay open-minded. The Healthcare Studies program exposes you to many areas of health care and can help you find the right fit. If you’re transitioning from community college, stay organized, build strong study habits early, and utilize resources like advising and office hours. Build relationships with professors and classmates, too, as those connections can lead to mentorship and real opportunities.
How has the online bachelor's degree program prepared you for graduate school and what’s next?
The HCS program strengthened my academic discipline, time management, and critical thinking beyond day-to-day clinical tasks. It also improved my research and writing skills, which will be essential in graduate school. Next, I plan to continue building my clinical experience and pursue admission to MUSC’s Cardiovascular Perfusion program, moving closer to a long-term career in perfusion.
