Emily DeTomaso's journey to becoming a physical therapist didn't follow a traditional path. After earning a bachelor's degree in mathematics, she built a successful career in business, gaining experience across several industries. Despite her professional success, she felt drawn to work that would allow her to make a more direct impact on the lives of others.

Having experienced physical therapy herself and supported her brother through recovery from a traumatic brain injury (TBI), DeTomaso witnessed firsthand the profound impact physical therapists can have on patients and their families. Inspired by those experiences, she made the life-changing decision to leave her corporate career behind and pursue a future in healthcare through MUSC's Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) program.

As she explored DPT programs, MUSC stood out for its supportive culture and commitment to student success. Now a graduate of the program preparing to begin a neurologic physical therapy residency at UNC Chapel Hill, DeTomaso reflects on the experiences that inspired her and shaped her journey to becoming a physical therapist.

In Her Own Words: Emily’s MUSC DPT Experience

Why did you choose MUSC’s Doctor of Physical Therapy program?
"There were many reasons I chose MUSC's DPT program, but my decision was solidified after my campus visit. Because I couldn't attend the DPT open house while working full time, the program arranged a private tour around my schedule. They even connected me with a faculty member who was genuinely interested in learning about my career experience and future goals. I felt not only supported but also celebrated as a second career student."

How have faculty and clinical experiences helped you grow as a future physical therapist?
"One of my favorite aspects of MUSC's DPT program was the faculty's commitment to creating opportunities for students to engage directly with patients. From patient demonstrations in class and co-treatments in the hospital to the CARES Clinic and adaptive waterskiing events, these experiences brought our learning to life. These experiences reminded us why we chose to become physical therapists while helping us build the confidence, communication skills, and clinical experience needed to succeed during rotations and beyond."

What advice would you give someone considering physical therapy as a second career?
“It is never too late. Your prior career experience has not only prepared you to succeed in a DPT program but also is a valuable asset to you and your future patients.”

Physical therapy is as much about human connection as it is rehabilitation.

A Future Focused on Connection and Care

For DeTomaso, physical therapy is as much about human connection as it is about rehabilitation. "As a physical therapist, I hope to create a safe, supportive environment where patients feel seen, heard, valued, and empowered throughout their care," DeTomaso said.

Her story is a reminder that there is no single path to becoming a physical therapist. Whether you’re beginning your educational journey or considering a second career, the experiences that shape you can become some of your greatest strengths as a future clinician.
