The Master of Science in Pathologists’ Assistant Studies (MSPATH) program at MUSC is an on-campus program that prepares students to excel in hospitals, pathology labs, forensic labs and beyond. The first-year blends rigorous coursework with hands-on experiences in cadaver and VR anatomy labs, as well as dedicated lab training. In the second year, students complete supervised clinical rotations across diverse settings, building expertise in specimen processing, gross dissection and postmortem examinations. Graduates earn the MS in Pathologists’ Assistant Studies and are eligible to sit for the ASCP Board of Certification Exam.
Summer 2027
Jul 1, 2026 – Oct 31, 2026
Experience immersive, practice-based learning combining didactic coursework, cadaver and virtual anatomy labs and supervised clinical rotations.
The Master of Science in Pathologists’ Assistant Studies (MSPATH) program is an on-campus program with curriculum is carefully crafted to guide students in developing the knowledge and skills necessary to excel as a pathologists’ assistant (PA) in all types of settings, including hospitals, pathology labs, forensic labs, morgues and more.
During the first year of the program, students complete their foundational didactic coursework while engaging in hands-on learning in the program’s dedicated lab space. Students will experience anatomy courses in the human cadaver lab, while also expanding their skills and knowledge in the campus’s VR anatomy lab. The program is a well-balanced academic and clinically based program dedicated to teaching practice-based competencies in a compassionate, safe and evidence-based patient care environment.
Beginning in the second year, students move into supervised clinical placements with practicing pathologists' assistants and pathologists. Over the course of three semesters, students are exposed to a variety of clinical settings to develop their knowledge and skills in processing basic and complex laboratory specimens, gross examination and dissection of anatomic pathology specimens and postmortem examinations.
Upon completion of the program, the student will be awarded a Master of Science in Pathologists’ Assistant Studies degree and be eligible to sit for the American Society of Clinical Pathology (ASCP) Board of Certification (BOC) Exam.

This means that these scholarships are only awarded to students who need some financial assistance to cover the cost of tuition and fees. If you would like to be considered for a financial need-based scholarship, you must have an up-to-date Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) on file. Make sure you list the Medical University of South Carolina on your FAFSA form, along with MUSC's code: 003438. We encourage you to submit your FAFSA as early as possible. Pathologists' assistants typically work in hospitals, private pathology labs and medical examiner offices, helping examine surgical specimens and perform autopsies. They may also work in academic institutions, or biotech companies.
We are a new program going through the accreditation process with National Accreditation Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences (NAACLS). Our students will graduate with a degree that makes them eligible to take the ASCP Board of Certification exam just like students from any other accredited program. We anticipate receiving full accreditation in April 2029. More information about this accreditation timeline can be found on our homepage.
We will accept 25 students per cohort.
Our first cohort will begin in the Summer 2026 (May 2026) semester. Future cohorts will start in the Summer semester each year.
