MUSC launches National Board-Certified Health & Wellness Coach Training & Education Program

The Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) is pleased to announce its new National Board-Certified Health & Wellness Coach Training & Education Program, which received approval from the National Board for Health and Wellness Coaching (NBHWC) in July 2024. Developed as a unique collaboration between the MUSC Health and Wellness Institute and the College of Health Professions, this innovative program aims to empower individuals to become National Board-Certified Health & Wellness Coaches by equipping them with the skills necessary to support clients in achieving their health and wellness goals.

MUSC’s program is the first publicly available NBHWC education program in South Carolina. The 5-month program is designed to prepare individuals from diverse backgrounds help patients and clients achieve their health and wellness goals. Participants will engage in a comprehensive curriculum covering essential coaching techniques, behavior change strategies, nutrition fundamentals, and health assessment skills, all informed by the latest research and best practices, and taught by expert faculty.

Uniquely, MUSC’s program is offered in a hybrid format, pairing online learning with one in-person intensive weekend in Charleston, SC during the third weekend of the course. Students benefit from hands-on experience and small class sizes. Upon completion, students are eligible to sit for the NBHWC certification exam which results in the NBC-HWC credential – representing the profession’s highest standard.

Applications for the National Board-Certified Health & Wellness Coach Training & Education Program open in early October 2024. Prospective students are encouraged to apply early, as spaces in the program are limited.
