Health Services Research Program

The College of Health Profession’s Health Services Research (HSR) program is administratively located within the Department of Healthcare Leadership and Management, but draws faculty and students from all CHP departments. Its research projects are concentrated in four areas:

1) Use of electronic and archival data in HSR;

2) Mixed-Methods Program Evaluation;

3) Cost, value and cost effectiveness studies; and

4) Design and analytic support for pragmatic and implementation trials.

The HSR Program has faculty trained in biostatistics, health economics, accounting, finance, law, organizational theory, rehabilitation, and health policy. Faculty research portfolios include studies on: quality improvement, comparative effectiveness, telehealth, access to care, health manpower issues, and assessment of patient outcomes and economics of interventions in HIV infection, stroke, hearing loss, opioid-use disorder, rehabilitation, and guideline adherence. Program faculty is responsible for leadership of the Health Service Track in the College’s Ph.D. in Health and Rehabilitation Science program and teach the research design and statistics classes for all our Ph.D. and Doctor of Health Administration (DHA) students. 

The MUSC Comparative Effectiveness Data Analytics Research (CEDAR) Core, which is the custodian of the University’s five terabytes of archival research data (HCUP, Medicare, Medicaid, and MarketScan® data), is located within the HSR program. Program faculty is responsible for providing consulting and analytical services to all MUSC faculty and students using CEDAR data.
