Meet Shannon Sommers, MSHI Class of 2019

Current Position:

Research Administrator, Delta Dental of Michigan

Why did you decide to earn your MSHI?

As a dental hygienist, I was researching other career opportunities in which I could improve and promote oral health outside of the clinical operatory. I found that the MSHI degree allowed me to impact patients' oral heath from behind the scenes. I could analyze dental data to discover patterns in the oral disease process and plan interventions accordingly.

How has earning your MSHI helped you in your current position?

The MSHI degree, coupled with my dental knowledge, is how I landed my new role as a research administrator. As part of professional services, I review and analyze provider billing and treatment patterns and then develop relative action plans for monitoring those patterns. Everything I learned in the program is vital to my success in my role. I went from a private practice dental office to a corporate organization. My cultural environment has shifted significantly. Having said that, the course content in each and every course applies to my day-to-day work.

What was the most valuable part of the MSHI program?

The fact that the program was offered online. I wouldn't have been able to attend this program if it was in a traditional setting because I already had a career and was working part-time.

What advice would you give to someone considering the MUSC MSHI program?

The program is rigorous. You will have days you doubt yourself. It will all come full circle by the end. Hang in there, and don't give up. Your future career is counting on you!
