Meet Hali Hutchinson, Class of 2019

What South Carolina Technical College did you attend?

I graduated from Horry-Georgetown Technical College in Conway, SC in Summer 2018 with my Associate in Science.

Why did you choose the Healthcare Studies program?

I chose the Healthcare Studies program to complete my bachelor’s degree because it gave me the opportunity to study at the Medical University of South Carolina. It also allowed me to prepare for a graduate-level program after transitioning from a small, technical college.

What was the most valuable part of the program?

The most valuable part of the program, in my opinion, are the relationships that you develop while you’re a student. I have come out of this program with so many more new contacts, advisors, and mentors than I could have hoped for. I went into this program considering a physician assistant (PA) program after my undergraduate degree, but it was my advisors and professors in this program that helped me to believe in myself and push me to more than I thought I was capable of.

What are you doing post-graduation?

Now, post-graduation, I am preparing to apply to medical school in pursuit of becoming an MD.

What advice would you give to someone considering this program?

I would advise anyone considering this program to talk to the director of the program, Dr. Gellar, or any of the past students about your goals post-graduation and what you expect to get out of their bachelor’s degree. I love telling students about this program because, as cliche as it sounds, I would not be applying to medical school if I had not applied to this program. If anyone is doubting if the Healthcare Studies program is for them, I would love to talk to them and share my testimony about how this program was such a positive influence on my life and all it has to offer.
