Meet Dwayne Hodges, MSHI Class of 2021

Current Position

Database Administrator II, Biomedical Health Informatics Center (BMIC) at MUSC

Why did you decided to earn your MSHI?

I have always had an interest in understanding how data analytics could be used to impact health outcomes in disadvantaged communities. In researching programs that would provide an avenue to meet my professional goals, I was drawn to the Master of Science in Health Informatics program at MUSC. This program gave me exposure to the many differing areas within health informatics and provided valuable instruction in how each facet of health informatics work together to ensure that health care systems are able to meet the technological and regulatory demands within the industry.

How has earning your MSHI helped you in your current position?

My position as a Database Administrator II in the Biomedical Health Informatics Center (BMIC) involves the extraction, transformation, and analysis of large datasets supporting Radiation Oncology. During my time as a student in the MSHI program, we were involved in learning different machine learning and artificial intelligence concepts and programming using various programs. We were also taught project management concepts and legal and regulatory requirements. Most importantly for me was the selection and completion of my Capstone project. I worked directly with the BMIC team to complete my project and gained valuable insight into how to apply my gained knowledge to real-world projects. This experience gave me the skills needed to perform and succeed in my position.

What was the most valuable part of the MSHI program?

The most valuable part of the MSHI program is the opportunity to engage with professors who are currently working in informatics. Having access to individuals who can provide real-world examples and discuss how learned concepts and processes are being used in healthcare today provided me with direction on where I would like to further my professional career. Also, the remote learning nature of the course allowed me to complete my study requirements on a flexible schedule that fit into my lifestyle

What advice would you give to someone considering the MUSC MSHI program?

Prior to joining the program, take inventory of your personal and professional goals and speak to an advisor about how the MSHI program could help you achieve these goals. Informatics is a multi-faceted program where one could choose from a variety of career paths, including research, data analysis, project management, machine learning, and artificial intelligence, or HIS management.
