Chris Kinsella is no stranger to multitasking. As a full-time acute care occupational therapy assistant (OTA), husband, father, and student in the Bachelor of Science in Healthcare Studies (HCS) program at MUSC his days are full—but fueled by purpose.

Kinsella’s journey into health care started after a family member experienced a stroke. Seeing the impact that health care professionals—especially occupational therapists—had on their recovery lit a spark in him. “I grew interested in that feeling of ‘making a difference,’” he said. That inspiration eventually led him to become an OTA.

After nearly three fulfilling years in the field, Kinsella set his sights on advancing even further. “I found that many of the growth opportunities in occupational therapy are available to OTs, more often than OTAs,” he explained. That’s when he found the HCS program—and it’s been a game-changer.

“The HCS program is a stepping-stone degree helping me prepare for what’s next—OT school,” Kinsella shared. “It’s nicely paced so one doesn’t feel too overwhelmed with assignments very often.” Beyond time management, the program has sharpened his communication skills, organization, and confidence, both personally and professionally. He particularly credits the Intro to Health Behavior and Etiology and Pathophysiology courses for deepening his understanding of patient care. “I really enjoy studying diseases because I encounter quite a few at the hospital,” he said. “I feel better equipped to treat patients when I understand what they’re going through.”

The HCS program provides students with a broad foundation in health care studies and population health, preparing them to become informed and engaged health care professionals. For Kinsella, that means applying what he’s learning in real-time. “One assignment asked us to analyze how we spend our time each week. It helped me see areas of my own routine that weren’t enriching—and I now use that strategy with my patients, too.” From creating visual aids to support patient education to helping people find time in their day for essential exercises, he’s already putting classroom insights into practice.

Kinsella believes the HCS program is for anyone who’s ready to grow. “Whether you work full time, are married, have a child, have social obligations—or all four like me—there is room for you to get that degree. Let your goals and desires be the motivation to succeed,” he encouraged. “Pace yourself and have grace for yourself. The semesters will start to fly by in no time.”

With the HCS degree as his compass, Kinsella is steadily working toward his ultimate goal: becoming a certified occupational therapist and continuing to improve the care he provides. Through his story, he hopes to show other students what’s possible by leading with purpose, passion, and a commitment to growth.
