Repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation Workshop Past Agenda

Tuesday, March 27, 2018 – Basic Principles and Methods in Healthy Individuals

8:30 a.m. to 9:00 a.m.
Breakfast and announcements

9:00 a.m. to 9:30 a.m.
Welcome to NC NM4R & Historical Perspective of NM4R
Steve Kautz, Ph.D., Rick Segal, PT, Ph.D.

Didactic Training
Objective: This will focus on the suite of TMS approaches used to investigate neurophysiology with TMS. These include single pulse, paired pulse inhibition/facilitation, cortical silent period, recruitment curve generation, paired associative stimulation, and interleaved TMS/MRI. The presentation will include basic neuroscience principles and pharmacology

9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m.
Physics and Experimental Rigor in TMS research
Colleen Hanlon, Ph.D. is the presenter

10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.
Using TMS as a Probe of cortical excitability: Interleaved TMS-MRI, Single/Paired Pulse
Colleen Hanlon, Ph.D. is the presenter

11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
Using TMS as a probe of pharmacology and plasticity: Pharmaco-TMS, Paired Associative Stimulation
Colleen Hanlon, Ph.D. is the presenter

12:30 p.m. to 1:00 p.m.
Lunch – Discussion of your interests and general Q&A

1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. Using TMS as an Intervention: fixed frequency, theta burst, & accelerated rTMS
Colleen Hanlon, Ph.D. is the presenter

2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.
Hands-on TMS Small Group Training
In this 3-hour module participants will break into groups and get exposure to the following environments:

Neuronavigation System
Interleaved TMS/MRI setup
Magventure TMS system (double blinding and active sham control)
Magstim TMS system & lower extremity laboratory
Brainsway H-Coil laboratory
Closed-loop TMS-EMG laboratory + PAS laboratory

Objectives:
To introduce participants to new, state-of-the-art TMS methods developments and biomarkers used as dependent measures
To describe the basic units and theory of electromagnetism, and make sure students understand how the different methods actually interact with the brain to cause stimulation. The importance of scalp-cortex distance will be highlighted as well as creating an effective sham.

To give the participants direct, hands-on practice with different TMS equipment, neuronavigation, protocol development, and programming on the machines.
